Metal frames are usually opened with a screw. Acetate or plastic frames are fitted by pressure, applying gentle heat with warm water or mild air to make the rim more flexible. Do not overheat the frame and never force the lens in cold.
Seat one edge of the lens into the groove first, then work around the rim with steady, even pressure. On folding or hinged frames, be especially careful not to stress the hinge area.
