Replacing a broken temple on your Ray-Ban 2186 State Street is a repair you can do at home in a few minutes: you undo the hinge screw, fit the new temple and tighten it again. Here is how to get it right first time, which tools you need and what to check before ordering the part.
The RB2186 State Street is an acetate model, a material that is tough and pleasant to work with. The front and the temples are joined by a screwed hinge, so there is no need to heat anything or use special tools to replace the temple.
Before you start
Check your glasses’ reference
On the inside of one of the temples you’ll find the full reference printed: the model (RB2186), the frame color code and the measurements, that is, the lens width and the bridge width and often the temple length. It is the same format you’ll see on any Ray-Ban; on an Aviator, for example, it reads something like “RB3025 001 58□14”. Take a photo of it: with that information you’ll choose the temple in the right color. If the broken temple is so damaged that you can’t read it, look at the other one, which carries the same information.
What you need
- A 3-in-1 precision screwdriver. For this model we use the Phillips tip.
- Fine tweezers to hold or pull out the screw if it is stubborn.
- A light-colored cloth on the table and a small container so you don’t lose the screw.
- The new temple: we have original temples for the Ray-Ban 2186 State Street in several colors.
If the original screw is bent or its head is worn, replace it at the same time. You’ll find it along with other small parts in Ray-Ban 2186 spare parts.
Step by step: how to change the RB2186 temple
- Open the glasses and lay them upside down on the cloth, with the hinge you are going to take apart clearly visible and well lit.
- Place the Phillips tip of the 3-in-1 screwdriver in the screw head. Press down slightly while turning counterclockwise so that the tip doesn’t slip.
- Unscrew the screw completely. If it gets stiff at the end, hold it with the tweezers and pull it out gently and in a straight line.
- Remove the old temple and put the screw in the container.
- Fit the new temple in position: the holes in the temple hinge and the front hinge must be perfectly aligned. If you are unsure which way round it goes, compare it with the other temple.
- Insert the screw and screw it in until it is held in place.
- Tighten just enough: the temple should open and close smoothly and stay in place, without being loose or stiff.
To finish, open and close the glasses several times and try them on. If you notice the hinge loosening with use, a small extra turn of the screw is usually enough.
Common mistakes
- Bending the screw as you remove it. If it bends, it can snap inside the hinge, and then it is much harder to get out. Always pull straight and take your time.
- Using a tip that doesn’t fit. A screwdriver that is too big or too small damages the screw head, and then there is no way to turn it.
- Overtightening. The hinge becomes stiff and you can mark the acetate. The screw only needs to hold things in place.
- Fitting the temple upside down. The end that goes behind the ear must curve downward, just like the other temple.
- Working over the sink. Eyewear screws are tiny; a light-colored cloth on a table keeps you from losing them.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know which temple color to order?
Look at the color code that appears after the model on the inside of the temple. If you’re not sure which one matches your glasses, send us a photo of that marking and of the frame and we’ll tell you which option to choose.
Are the original temples the same as the ones my glasses came with?
Yes. The original parts we sell are made by Ray-Ban: we have been a certified EssilorLuxottica distributor since 2018, so the temple fits and looks exactly like the factory one.
What if the screw won’t come out?
Don’t force it. Make sure the tip fits properly, turn slowly while pressing down and use the tweezers at the end. If it snaps or gets stuck, send us a photo and we’ll advise you.
Do the parts come with a warranty?
All our parts come with a 3-year warranty against manufacturing defects, and we’ll help you by email if something doesn’t fit as it should.
