To change the temples on a pair of Ray-Ban 3025 Aviators, all you have to do is remove the screw that joins the temple to the front, fit the new temple in the correct position, tighten it again and adjust the temple tip to your liking. It is a repair that takes just a few minutes and you can do it at home with a precision screwdriver.
The Aviator is Ray-Ban’s most classic model, the one created for pilots that never goes out of style. Its teardrop shape gives great coverage from the sun and, although it is made entirely of metal, it is a lightweight model. Its thin temples are precisely the part that most often bends or breaks with use.
Before you start
Check the reference of your sunglasses
On the inside of the temple you will find the reference printed. On an Aviator you will see something like “RB3025 001 58□14”: the model (3025), the frame color code (001) and the measurements, that is, the lens width (58) and the bridge width (14). The Aviator comes in several sizes and colors, so take a photo of it before ordering the temple.
What you need
- A 3-in-1 precision screwdriver.
- A light-colored cloth and a small container for the screw.
- The new temple: original Ray-Ban 3025 Aviator temples or, for a more affordable option, compatible temples.
Step by step: how to change the temples on the RB3025
- Open the sunglasses and rest them on the cloth with the hinge in view.
- Using the 3-in-1 screwdriver, remove screw 84, the one that holds the temple to the front.
- Remove the old temple.
- Fit the new temple in the correct position, with the hinge holes lined up, and insert the screw.
- Tighten the screw until the temple is secure and opens and closes smoothly.
- Adjust the temple tip to your liking: the curved end should rest comfortably behind your ear.
Try the sunglasses on and compare the two temples. If one rests on your ear before the other, correct the curve of the temple tip gently and a little at a time, or ask an optician to adjust it for you.
If you are changing both temples
Do one at a time. That way the temple that is still fitted serves as a guide to the correct position of the new one and to the curve the temple tip should have. It is the easiest way to make sure both end up the same.
Common mistakes
- Fitting the temple the wrong way round. The temple tip should point down and inward, just like the one on the other temple. If you are not sure, compare it with the other one before tightening.
- Overtightening the screw. The hinge becomes stiff and the screw can strip.
- Bending the temple tip in one go. Adjust it in several small steps; thin metal gets marked if you force it.
- Reusing a worn screw. If the head is damaged, replace it with a new one from the Ray-Ban 3025 spare parts.
Frequently asked questions
What is screw 84?
It is the name we use for the hinge screw that joins the temple to the front. It is the one you need to remove to change the temple.
Do the temples fit all Aviator sizes?
Don’t take it for granted. Check the options for your lens size on the product page and, if in doubt, write to us with a photo of the markings on the temple.
Original or compatible?
Original temples are genuine Ray-Ban parts (we have been a certified EssilorLuxottica distributor since 2018), and compatible temples are a good-quality, more affordable alternative. Both come with a 3-year warranty against manufacturing defects.
Can I change the lenses as well?
Yes, on the Aviator they are changed by loosening the rim screw. We have original, compatible and prescription lenses for this model.
