Replacing the arms on a pair of Ray-Ban 6414 glasses is a simple repair: you remove the hinge screw with the flat tip of a 3-in-1 screwdriver, fit the new arm the right way round and tighten it again. In a few minutes your eyeglasses are as good as new.
The RB6414 is a discreet, elegant eyeglass frame with a rounded front that suits many face shapes. Its main colors are gold and silver, which makes it easy to match. As it is a thin metal frame, the arms are what suffer most from everyday wear.
Before you start
Identify your frame
On the inside of the arm you’ll see the reference printed: the model number (6414), the color code and the lens and bridge measurements, in the same format Ray-Ban uses on all its models (for example, “RB3025 001 58□14” on an Aviator). Take a photo of it before you start so you can order the arm in the right color.
What you need
- A 3-in-1 precision screwdriver. For this model you use the flat tip.
- A light-colored cloth and a container for the screw.
- The new arm: original Ray-Ban 6414 arms.
Step by step: how to change the RB6414 arms
- Take the 3-in-1 screwdriver and choose the flat tip.
- Rest the glasses open on the cloth, with the hinge in view.
- Remove the arm screw by turning it counterclockwise and put it in the container.
- Remove the old arm.
- Fit the new arm, lining up its hole with the one in the hinge. It is important that the flat side faces outward and the end of the temple tip points downward.
- Insert the screw and tighten it again until the arm is secure but opens and closes smoothly.
To finish, try the glasses on. If you notice the new arm doesn’t sit behind your ear the same way as the other one, an optician can adjust it in no time; with eyeglass frames, a good fit makes a big difference to comfort.
Take the opportunity to check the rest of the frame
With the glasses already in your hand, take a look at the other hinge: if its screw is loose, give it a small turn with the same flat tip. Also check the temple tips, the plastic sleeves at the end of the arms, because over time they harden or crack and rub behind the ear. Replacing them at the same time as the arm saves you a second repair later on.
Common mistakes
- Fitting the arm the wrong way round. This is the most common mistake with this model. Remember: flat side facing outward and the end of the temple tip pointing downward.
- Using the wrong tip. A Phillips tip or one that is too wide damages the screw slot. Use the flat one.
- Overtightening. The hinge becomes stiff and the screw can strip its thread.
- Bending the arm to make it fit. If it doesn’t go in, check the orientation instead of forcing it.
- Losing the screw. Always work on a light-colored cloth. If you lose it or it is damaged, we have screws in Ray-Ban 6414 spare parts.
