The lenses of the Ray-Ban RB3647N aren’t mounted directly in the metal, but inside a plastic ring that fits into the front. To replace them, you have to detach the temple, open the front, take out the lens with its ring, transfer the ring to the new lens and put everything back together. With gentle heat and patience, it can be done at home.
The RB3647N is an unusual model in the Ray-Ban range: it combines a double bridge with round glass lenses available in many colors, often matching the temple tips. That ring around the lens is what makes the replacement a little different from other metal models.
Before you start
Identify your model and size
On the inside of the temple you’ll see the full reference printed: the model (RB3647N), the color code and the lens and bridge measurements, in the same format as on any Ray-Ban (for example, “RB3025 001 58□14” on an Aviator). Note down the lens size, because the new lens has to be exactly that size.
What you need
- A precision screwdriver for the hinge screw.
- A bowl of hot but not boiling water: you should be able to touch it with your hand.
- A microfiber cloth to hold the lenses and dry them.
- The new lenses: replacement lenses for the Ray-Ban 3647N.
Step by step: how to change the RB3647N lenses
- Remove the screw that joins the temple to the front and keep it safe.
- Remove the temple.
- Carefully open the front slightly and take out the old lens together with its plastic ring.
- If the ring is stiff, warm it up a little by dipping the lens and ring in the hot water for a few moments.
- Once it has warmed up, remove the plastic ring, taking care not to break it.
- Take the new lens and fit it inside the ring. If it is difficult, warm the ring in the hot water again.
- With the lens inside the ring, place it back in the front, matching its shape to the opening.
- Put the temple back in position.
- Insert the screw and tighten it until everything is secure.
When you have finished, check that the lens doesn’t rotate or have any play inside the ring and that the front is properly closed.
Tips for handling glass lenses
The lenses on this model are made of glass, so they need to be handled with care. Dry them thoroughly with the microfiber cloth after taking them out of the water and before refitting them, so that no drops get trapped between the lens and the ring. Don’t rest them on hard surfaces or drop them in the sink. And if you are replacing both, do them one at a time: the one still fitted serves as a reference for how the new one should look.
Common mistakes
- Using water that is too hot. The aim is to warm the plastic so that it gives, not to soften it too much. If you can’t put your hand in it, it is too hot.
- Pulling on the ring when it is cold. If it is stiff, it is under strain and can snap. Better to warm it a little more.
- Opening the front too far. You only need just enough space for the ring to come out; the metal can bend out of shape.
- Fitting the lens rotated. Even though it is round, match it to the shape of the opening before closing.
- Losing the screw. Work on a light-colored cloth and put the screw away as soon as you take it out.
Frequently asked questions
What is the plastic ring for?
It holds the lens inside the metal front. That is why, when you change the lens, you have to reuse the ring and transfer it from the old lens to the new one.
What if the ring breaks?
Don’t try to fit the lens without it. Send us a photo and we’ll tell you what options you have for your reference.
Can I use a hair dryer instead of hot water?
You can use a hair dryer on a low setting, held at a distance, warming the ring little by little. Never apply intense or direct heat.
What warranty do the lenses have?
All our parts come with a 3-year warranty against manufacturing defects. We have been a certified EssilorLuxottica distributor since 2018.
