How to change the RB3183 temples

Changing the temples on Ray-Ban 3183 sunglasses involves a little trick: when you remove the screw, a tab in the hinge retracts inward, and the new temple won’t fit until you hold that tab out with a thin piece of wire. We explain how to do it step by step so you don’t get stuck.

The RB3183 is a small, light and comfortable model, which is why it is so popular. Its lenses are easy to change, as they are fixed to the frame with the screws from the lens kit. The temples, on the other hand, are what usually cause the most trouble.

Before you start

Check your reference

On the inside of the temple you will find the reference of your sunglasses: the model (RB3183), the color code and the measurements, in the same format Ray-Ban uses on all its models (for example, “RB3025 001 58□14” on an Aviator). Take a photo of it before you take anything apart so you can order the temple in the right color.

What you need

  • A precision screwdriver for the hinge screw.
  • A piece of thin wire (an unfolded paper clip will do) to hold the tab out.
  • Something small to act as a stop in the gap, such as a toothpick or a small piece of bent wire.
  • A light-colored cloth and the new temple: original Ray-Ban 3183 temples.

Step by step: how to change the temples on the RB3183

  1. Remove the screw that holds the temple to the front and take off the old temple.
  2. Look at the new temple: it has a tab that retracts inward. If you try to fit it against the front as it is, it won’t go in.
  3. Insert the tip of the wire into the hole in the temple hinge and pull to draw the tab out.
  4. In the gap this leaves, place something to act as a support so the tab doesn’t slide back in while you assemble it.
  5. Fit the new temple to the front, line up the holes and release the wire.
  6. Insert the screw and tighten it until the temple is secure and moves smoothly.

We know it can be a bit tricky the first time. If you get stuck, repeat the wire step calmly: as soon as the tab is held in place, the temple slides in effortlessly. When you have finished, open and close the sunglasses several times and try them on: the temple should rest properly behind your ear, and the hinge should not creak or have any play. If you notice it working loose with use, just give the screw another small turn.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to force the temple in. If it won’t go in, it is because the tab has retracted. Forcing it will only bend the hinge.
  • Using wire that is too thick. It won’t go through the hole, or it will enlarge it. A thin one, like a small paper clip, is enough.
  • Releasing the wire before the holes are lined up. The tab springs back into place and you have to start again.
  • Overtightening the screw. The temple will be stiff and the hinge will suffer.
  • Losing small parts. Work on a light-colored cloth and put the screw away as soon as you take it out.

Frequently asked questions

Why won’t the new temple fit?

It is almost always because of the inner tab, which has retracted. Draw it out with a thin wire, hold it with a stop and try again.

Do I need new screws?

If the original screw is in good condition, you can reuse it. If the head is worn or it keeps working loose, you will find screws and other parts in Ray-Ban 3183 spare parts.

How do you change the lenses on the 3183?

They are screwed to the frame with the screws from the lens kit, so it is a simple job. We have a dedicated tutorial for the lenses of this model.

Do the temples come with a warranty?

Yes, 3 years against manufacturing defects. The original temples are genuine Ray-Ban parts: we have been a certified EssilorLuxottica distributor since 2018.
