How to change Oakley 9406 lenses
replace Oakley 9406 lenses

Replacing the lens on a pair of Oakley Sutro 9406 is one of the easiest swaps there is: the shield lens is press-fitted into the frame, so you just push with your thumbs to take it out and press again to fit the new one. You don’t need any tools.

The Sutro is one of Oakley’s boldest models. Its lens is a one-piece shield that covers the whole field of vision and offers a lot of sun protection, which makes it very popular for sports. That is exactly why the lenses take knocks and scratches, and replacing them brings the glasses back to their original condition.

Before you start

Confirm your model

On the inside of the arm of your Oakleys you will find the model reference printed. Check that it is a 9406 Sutro before ordering the shield lens: Oakley has other similar-looking models whose lenses are not interchangeable. If you are not sure, write to us with a photo of the markings.

What you need

  • The new shield lens: original Oakley 9406 Sutro lenses.
  • A clean microfiber cloth to hold the lens without leaving fingerprints.
  • Clean, dry hands and a clear surface.

Step by step: how to replace the Oakley 9406 lens

  1. Hold the glasses with the inside facing you, gripping the frame firmly but without twisting it.
  2. Place your thumbs on the inside of the shield lens, near one corner, and press outward.
  3. Once that corner comes free, work your way along the edge, pressing a little at a time, until the lens comes completely out of the frame.
  4. Use the cloth to clean the groove in the frame where the lens sits; this way the new one will seat better.
  5. Position the new shield lens from the outside, lined up with the frame.
  6. Start pressing at one corner from the outer face of the lens and work along the edge until it clicks in all the way around.
  7. Run your fingers around the whole edge to make sure no section is left loose.

If at any point you feel the frame bending too much, stop and change where you are pressing. It is better to go little by little than to put all the force on a single point.

How to care for your new lens

Once it is fitted, clean it with lukewarm water and a microfiber cloth, never with paper or your T-shirt, which drag dust across the lens and end up scratching it. Keep the glasses in their case when you are not wearing them and don’t leave them resting lens-down. If you do outdoor sports, rinse them with fresh water after each session to remove sweat, sand or salt before drying them.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing from the wrong side. To remove the lens, press from the inside outward; to fit it, press from the outer face.
  • Trying to pop it out in one go. Start at a corner and work along the edge; don’t pull from the center.
  • Touching the lens with your fingers. It leaves fingerprints and grease; hold it with the cloth whenever you can.
  • Leaving a section unseated. The lens can come loose with a knock or sit crooked. Check the whole edge.
  • Twisting the frame. Sports frames are flexible, but you should not force them more than necessary.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a screwdriver?

No. On the Sutro the shield lens clips into the frame and is replaced using just finger pressure.

Can I change the lens color?

Yes, as long as you choose a shield lens for the 9406 Sutro. You will see the available colors on the product page.

What should I do if the lens is loose?

Check that it has clicked in all the way around by pressing along the edge again. If it still wobbles, the frame may be damaged; write to us with a photo and we will take a look.

Do the lenses come with a warranty?

Yes, 3 years against manufacturing defects. The original lenses are made by Oakley: we have been a certified EssilorLuxottica distributor since 2018.

Spare parts for your Oakley Sutro

As well as the shield lens, we offer other original spare parts for the Oakley 9406 Sutro, and you can see the rest of the models in original Oakley replacement lenses. Standard shipping is free on orders over $ 50.53. If you are unsure about your model, write to us and we will help you by email.
