Compatible lenses: How are they made?

Compatible lenses are replacement lenses made to fit your Ray-Ban or Oakley glasses without being branded parts. Ours are made from high-quality triacetate (TAC), are made in Europe and, in the case of sun lenses, offer UV 400 protection and are polarized. Here is how they are made and how they differ from the originals.

They are a great option for replacing the lenses in your glasses: there are lots of colors available and they cost less than the originals, without compromising on good visual quality.

Main features

  • Material: high-quality triacetate (TAC).
  • Origin: made in Europe.
  • Protection: all sun lenses offer UV 400 protection and are polarized.
  • Warranty: just like the originals, 3 years against manufacturing defects.

How they are made

In the video you can see the process our compatible lenses go through. The key point is that each lens is made in the shape of the model it is designed for, so that it fits your frame just like the factory lens, and that the coatings explained below can be applied on top of that base.

It all comes down to the shape: each model and each lens size has its own outline, which is why we always ask you to check the reference printed on the inside of the arm of your glasses, for example “RB3025 001 58□14”, where 58 is the lens width.

Available coatings

Unlike original lenses, compatible lenses can be given a range of different coatings:

  • Polarized: blocks reflected light and only lets useful light through. It provides sharp vision and natural color perception.
  • Scratch-resistant: also known as hard coating, this is a layer that makes the lens more resistant to scratches.
  • Anti-reflective: prevents glare and reduces stray light reaching your eyes.
  • Oleophobic: makes the lens repel grease, such as fingerprints. That is why it stays clean much longer than a lens with a standard anti-reflective coating, and since it needs cleaning less often, the risk of scratching it is also reduced.
  • Saltwater-resistant: a special treatment that makes the coating film more stable. It withstands a 48-hour seawater immersion test and resists weak acids and alkaline water, making it ideal for the beach.

Original or compatible: how to choose

  • Choose original lenses if you want exactly the same lens your glasses came with from the factory. We have been a certified EssilorLuxottica distributor since 2018.
  • Choose compatible lenses if you are looking for a lower price, a wide variety of colors or extra coatings such as oleophobic or saltwater-resistant.

Either way, the lens is designed for your specific model and comes with the same warranty.

How to find compatible lenses for your glasses

  1. Find your glasses’ model and lens size on the inside of the arm.
  2. Type the model number into the store’s search bar.
  3. Open the compatible lenses product page and choose the lens size and color.
  4. If the product page allows it, add the coatings you want.

Our compatible lenses are available for most models. You can find them in compatible Ray-Ban lenses and, if you prefer the factory part, in original Ray-Ban lenses and original Oakley lenses.
