Changing a temple with a spring hinge (also called a flex hinge) is a little trickier than a regular temple, because the spring pulls on the hinge and the holes don’t line up. The trick is simple: hold the spring open with a paper clip while you fit the screw. Here is how to do it on the most common type of flex hinge.

Spring-hinge temples open slightly beyond their normal position and spring back on their own. They are comfortable and durable, but if you have ever tried to change one, you’ll know the hinge just won’t stay put. That is why we made this tutorial and the video above.

Before you start

Identify your model

Look for the reference on the inside of one of the temples. It will be in a format similar to “RB3025 001 58□14”: the number after “RB” is the model, followed by the frame color and, at the end, the lens size and the bridge. With that reference you can order the exact temple: there are many types of flex hinge and each model has its own.

What you need

  • Two ordinary metal paper clips, the office kind.
  • A precision screwdriver.
  • The right temples for your glasses model.
  • Hinge screws, if yours are damaged or missing.
  • A soft cloth and a well-lit surface.

How to change a spring-hinge temple step by step

  1. Remove the hinge screw. Using the screwdriver, undo the screw that holds the old temple to the front and keep it somewhere safe.
  2. Remove the old temple. Carefully detach it from the front.
  3. Open the spring on the new temple. Using a paper clip, pull the temple’s hinge outward to open the spring, as shown in the image.
  4. Hold it open with another clip. While keeping the spring open, slide the second clip into the gap so the hinge stays in that position without you having to hold it.
  5. Fit the temple onto the hinge. The temple’s hinge is now in place and the holes line up with those on the front.
  6. Insert the screw and tighten it. Do it gently, without forcing it.
  7. Remove the clip. The spring will return to its position and the temple will have the same tension as the original.
  8. Check. Open and close the temple several times; it should spring back into place on its own.

Tip: before starting on the new temple, practice opening the spring on the old one with the clip. You’ll see how far you need to pull, and it will be much easier when it counts.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to fit the screw without opening the spring. The holes don’t line up and you’ll end up scratching the hinge.
  • Overstretching the spring. Open it only as far as needed for the holes to line up.
  • Overtightening the screw. The temple will be stiff or the thread will get damaged.
  • Forgetting to remove the clip. It sounds obvious, but it happens when you are in a hurry.
  • Ordering a temple for a different model. Flex hinges aren’t universal: always go by the reference.

Caring for spring-hinge temples

Always take your glasses off with both hands. If you pull on just one temple, you strain the spring again and again and it will end up breaking once more. It is also best not to leave them fully open on top of your head for hours.

Frequently asked questions

Does this method work for all flex hinges?

There are many types of spring-hinge temples. This is the most common; some models have the spring inside the temple itself, which changes the process slightly. If you’re not sure, send us a photo.

Can I use another tool instead of a paper clip?

A paper clip works well because it is thin and strong. Avoid sharp objects that could scratch the temple.

Can I reuse the old screw?

Yes, if it is in good condition. If the head is damaged, it is better to replace it.

Find your glasses' reference
