How to change the temples/arms of your Ray-Bans?

Replacing the temples (or arms) on a pair of Ray-Bans is a simple repair you can do at home in just a few minutes: undo the hinge screw, fit the new temple and screw it back in. The key is to choose the right temple for your model and to take your time, because the parts are very small. In this guide we walk you through it step by step.

Before you start

Identify your exact model

Before you buy anything, look at the inside of one of the temples. That is where you will find the reference of your glasses, something like “RB3025 001 58□14”. The number after “RB” is the model; next comes the frame color code and, finally, the lens size (lens width) and the bridge width. On many models the temple length in millimeters is also printed at the end. With that information you can choose the temple that fits your frame.

If the temple with the reference is the very one that broke or got lost, don’t worry: check the other one or send us a photo of your glasses and we will help you identify them.

What you need

  • The correct replacement temple for your model and lens size.
  • A precision screwdriver of the right size.
  • Fine tweezers, if you have them: handling the screws with your fingers is very fiddly.
  • A soft cloth and a clear, well-lit surface, so that no parts go missing.

How to change the temples on your Ray-Bans step by step

  1. Find the right screw. Metal frames usually have two screws: one that closes the lens rim and another in the temple hinge. The one you need to undo is the hinge screw. Acetate or plastic frames normally have only one: the hinge screw.
  2. Unscrew carefully. Rest the glasses on the cloth with the temple open and turn the screw counterclockwise until it comes out completely.
  3. Keep the screw somewhere safe. It is tiny and easy to lose. A lid or a small white dish will help you keep it in sight.
  4. Fit the new temple. Position the temple at the hinge at an angle of about 45° to the front, so that the holes in both parts line up.
  5. Insert the screw. Using the tweezers, place the screw in the hole and give it the first few turns with your fingers or the screwdriver, without forcing it.
  6. Tighten gently. Screw it in until the temple is secure but still opens and closes smoothly. If it feels stiff, loosen it slightly.
  7. Check the result. Open and close the temple several times and try the glasses on to make sure they sit straight.

You can watch the whole process in the video at the top of this article.

Common mistakes

  • Buying the temple from the photo rather than the reference. Some models look very similar from the outside but have a different hinge. Always go by the number printed on the temple.
  • Using a screwdriver that doesn’t fit. If the tip is too big or too small, you will damage the screw head, and then it becomes very hard to remove.
  • Overtightening. An overtightened screw can damage the hinge or leave the temple stiff.
  • Undoing the wrong screw. On metal frames, if you loosen the rim screw, the lens may fall out.
  • Forcing a spring hinge. If your temple has a flex hinge, the holes won’t line up at the first attempt; you need to hold the spring open while you insert the screw.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace just one temple?

Yes. Often only one breaks, so you can replace just the left or just the right one. Make sure you choose the correct side when you place your order.

Do I need new screws?

If the original screw is in good condition, you can reuse it. If it has been lost or the head is damaged, you will find small parts for many models in our section of other Ray-Ban spare parts (screws, nose pads and temple tips).

What if my temple has a spring?

Temples with a flex hinge have a small spring that you need to hold open while you insert the screw. We have a dedicated guide for this type of hinge; if you have any questions, get in touch.

What if I can’t find the reference on the temple?

With wear, the numbers can rub off. Send us photos of the front and the temples and we will help you identify the model.

Find your glasses' reference

Look on the inside of one of the temple arms. That's where you'll find the details needed to find the right replacement part.

To find lenses: the model and lens size are usually enough. For arms: we also recommend checking the color and length.
