STEP 4

Fit the temple onto the hinge and tighten the screw

Replacing the temples on the Ray-Ban RB7017 involves a little trick: the flex spring sits inside the temple itself, so when you remove the screw and line up the new temple, the holes don’t match. The solution is to open the spring with a paper clip and keep it open while you screw the temple in. We’ll walk you through it step by step so you don’t lose your patience.

The four most common types of temple

Glasses come with countless types of hinges, but when it comes to replacing temples, the differences aren’t that big. We group them into four types:

  • Classic metal temples: screw hinge, no spring.
  • Plastic temples: made of acetate, also with a screw in the hinge.
  • Spring hinge temples: the hinge has a visible spring.
  • Temples with an internal spring hinge: the spring is hidden inside the temple. This is the case with the RB7017.

Before you start

Confirm your model

The reference is printed on the inside of the temple, in a format like “RB3025 001 58□14”. In your case you’ll see “RB7017” followed by the frame color code and two numbers separated by a square: the lens size and the bridge width. Since the RB7017 is an eyeglass frame (for prescription lenses), your temple may show “RX” instead of “RB”.

What you need

  • The replacement temples for the RB7017.
  • A precision screwdriver.
  • Two metal paper clips.
  • A soft cloth and good lighting.

How to replace the RB7017 temples step by step

The images at the top of the article show each step:

  1. Get the right replacement temple. Check the model and the side (left or right).
  2. Remove the screw from the temple you’re replacing. Keep it somewhere safe, because it’s very small.
  3. Open the spring on the new temple. Slide the temple trim back slightly, open the spring with a paper clip and keep it open by inserting a second clip into the spring opening.
  4. Fit the temple and screw it in. With the spring open, the holes line up: place the temple on the hinge and tighten the screw gently.
  5. Remove the clip and check. The spring returns to its place. Open and close the temple several times to make sure it works properly.

If the clip slips out too early, don’t worry: open the spring again and put the clip back in. Be patient; it usually works on the second try.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to screw it in without opening the spring. It’s the number one cause of frustration with this model: the holes don’t line up.
  • Pulling the spring too far. Open it just enough for the holes to align.
  • Forcing the trim. Slide it back only slightly and carefully, without bending it.
  • Overtightening the screw. The temple will feel stiff or the thread will get damaged.
  • Getting the side wrong. Check whether you need the left or the right temple before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Why don’t the holes line up when I fit the new temple?

Because the internal spring pulls the hinge into the temple. When you open it with the clip, the hinge comes out far enough to line up with the one on the frame front.

Can I replace the lenses at the same time?

Yes. We have prescription lenses for Ray-Ban 7017 as well as compatible lenses for Ray-Ban 7017.

What if I’ve lost the screw?

Among the original Ray-Ban 7017 spare parts you’ll find screws and other small parts.

Does this guide work for other glasses with an internal spring?

The principle is the same for many temples with a hidden spring: open the spring and keep it open while you screw the temple in. Even so, every model has its quirks; if you’re unsure, send us a photo of the hinge.

How do I stop it from breaking again?

Take your glasses off with both hands. Pulling on just one temple strains the spring and eventually breaks it.
