The lenses on the Ray-Ban RB4147 Boyfriend are press-fitted into the frame, with no screws. To take them out, simply flex the glasses slightly at the bridge and push the lens out with your thumbs; to put them in, insert the lens from the top and finish by pressing at the bottom until you hear a “click”. Here is how to do it safely.
The RB4147 is a plastic model with soft lines and a retro feel. As with most injected or acetate frames, the rim holds the lens by its own tension, so the trick is to work gently and take your time.
Before you start
Check your model and lens size
On the inside of one arm you will see the glasses’ reference, in a format such as “RB3025 001 58□14”. In your case it should start with “RB4147”. Next comes the frame color code and two numbers separated by a square: the lens size (lens width, in millimeters) and the bridge width. With this information you will choose exactly the right lens. Note: there is an Oakley model with the same number (Oakley 4147 Contrail) that has nothing to do with it; make sure your reference starts with “RB”.
What you need
- Replacement lenses for the RB4147.
- A soft cloth or microfiber to rest the glasses on and protect the lenses.
- Optional: hot water (not boiling) or a hair dryer on a low setting, in case the frame is very stiff.
How to replace the RB4147 lenses step by step
- Prepare the frame. If it feels very stiff, warm it for a few seconds with hot water or the hair dryer on low. This makes the material give a little and easier to work with.
- Flex the glasses at the bridge. Hold the frame with both hands and bend it very slightly around the bridge.
- Push the lens out with your thumbs. With a cloth underneath, press the lens from the inside outward until it comes out of the rim.
- Insert the new lens from the top. First place the top edge of the lens in the rim’s groove, checking that it is the right way round.
- Finish at the bottom. Press the lower part of the lens inward, following the contour of the rim.
- Listen for the “click”. When the lens is fully in place, you will feel a small snap. That means it is properly seated.
- Check the edge. Run your finger around the edge to make sure no part is sitting outside the groove.
The video at the top of the article shows the whole process.
Common mistakes
- Bending the bridge too much. A slight flex is enough; forcing it can mark or break the frame.
- Overheating. Never use boiling water or the hair dryer on full: you could warp the frame.
- Starting to insert the lens from the bottom. It is much easier to start at the top and finish at the bottom.
- Working without a cloth. Lenses scratch easily if they are placed on a hard surface.
- Mixing up the sides. The left and right lenses are not the same; check the shape before fitting them.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need tools?
No. On the RB4147 the lenses have no screw: all you need is your hands, a cloth and, if necessary, a little gentle heat.
Are there compatible lenses for the RB4147?
Yes. As well as the originals, we offer compatible lenses for the RB4147 Boyfriend, a more affordable alternative made for this frame.
