To replace the lenses on a Ray-Ban Clubmaster, you loosen a small screw located under the brow bar of the frame and gently push the lens out. It is a simple job you can do at home with a precision screwdriver. Here is how to do it on the RB3016 and its variants, the RB2176, RB3507 and RB4354.
The Clubmaster is one of Ray-Ban’s great classics: an acetate brow bar, a metal lower rim and an unmistakable retro look. It is precisely this combination of materials that means the lens isn’t press-fitted as in a Wayfarer, but held in place by a screw.
Before you start
Identify your model and lens size
On the inside of the temple you’ll find the reference, in a format such as “RB3025 001 58□14”. The number after “RB” is the model (in your case 3016, 2176, 3507 or 4354), followed by the frame color code and, at the end, two numbers separated by a square: the lens size (lens width) and the bridge. This matters because each model and each lens size takes its own lens. For example, the RB2176 is the folding Clubmaster and the RB3507 is the aluminum version.
What you need
- The replacement lenses for your model and lens size.
- A precision screwdriver.
- A soft cloth to rest the glasses on.
How to replace the Clubmaster lenses step by step
- Locate the screw. It is under the brow bar, on the side of the lens rim.
- Loosen the screw. Using the precision screwdriver, unscrew it just enough for the rim to open.
- Carefully remove the lens. Rest the glasses on the cloth and press gently on the lens with your thumbs until it comes out.
- Fit the new lens. Seat it in the rim, making sure it goes into the groove of the brow bar and of the lower rim.
- Tighten the screw. Do it gently until the lens is held firmly.
- Check. Wiggle the lens slightly with your fingers: it should not move or fall out.
The video at the top shows the whole process on a Clubmaster.
Tip: before fitting the new lens, run the cloth along the groove of the rim and the brow bar to remove any dust or debris. That way the lens seats better and the screw closes without effort. If you notice the lens is under tension when you tighten, back the screw off a quarter turn.
Common mistakes
- Mixing up models. The RB3016, RB2176, RB3507 and RB4354 look alike, but each one has its own lens. Check the reference on the temple.
- Forgetting the lens size. The Clubmaster is made in several sizes.
- Pressing too hard. If the screw isn’t loosened enough, forcing the lens can damage it or bend the rim.
- Overtightening. A screw that is too tight can put stress on the lens or strip the thread.
- Working on a hard surface. The lens can drop out when you open the rim.
