Replacing the lenses on a pair of Ray-Ban RB3025 Aviator Large Metal is quick: you loosen the screw that closes the rim, remove the damaged lens and fit the new one. With a precision screwdriver and a little care, you can do it at home in a few minutes. Here is how, step by step.
The Aviator is Ray-Ban’s icon, both as sunglasses and as prescription eyeglasses. Many of its lenses are made of mineral glass, so a knock or a fall can scratch or break them. Fortunately, since it is a metal frame, the lens is neither glued in nor press-fitted, and replacing it is very easy.
Before you start
Check your lens size
The RB3025 is made in several sizes. On the inside of the arm you will see a reference such as “RB3025 001 58□14”. The number before the square is the lens size, that is, the width of the lens in millimeters; the number after it is the bridge width. Always order lenses in the size shown on your arm: a lens of a different size will not fit the rim.
What you need
- Replacement lenses for the RB3025 in your lens size.
- A precision screwdriver.
- Tweezers (optional) to handle the screws.
- A soft cloth to rest the glasses and lenses on.
How to replace the RB3025 lenses step by step
- Identify the screws. On the Aviator, as on most metal frames, there are two screws on each side: one closes the lens rim and the other holds the arm.
- Remove the lens screw. Unscrew it completely and keep it somewhere safe.
- Partially loosen the arm screw. There is no need to take it out; loosening it slightly is enough to let the rim open more easily.
- Take out the lens. A gentle push from the inside will pop the lens out. Do this over the cloth, because it can fall as soon as you release the screw.
- Fit the new lens. Make sure it sits properly in the rim’s groove and is the right way round.
- Screw everything back in. Put the rim screw back and tighten the arm screw. Do it gently, without forcing.
- Check. The lens should not move or rotate inside the rim. If it wobbles, give the screw a little extra turn.
You can see the whole process in the video in this article.
Common mistakes
- Ordering lenses in the wrong size. This is the most common mistake. Always check the number on your arm.
- Overtightening. With glass lenses, a rim that is too tight can put the lens under stress or even break it.
- Not loosening the arm screw. If the rim does not open enough, the lens has to be forced in.
- Losing the screw. They are tiny: work on a light-colored, uncluttered surface.
- Leaving the lens poorly seated. If part of it sits outside the groove, it will come loose with use.
