Replacing the temples on a pair of Ray-Ban RB2140 Wayfarer sunglasses is very easy: you undo the hinge screw, remove the broken temple and screw on the new one. With a precision screwdriver it takes just a few minutes. We explain it step by step, and you can watch it done live in the video above.
The Wayfarer is Ray-Ban’s most iconic acetate model, the star of countless films and as current as the day it was launched. Many of you have asked us for this tutorial, so here it is.
When should you replace the temples?
Wayfarer temples tend to suffer from knocks, from being sat on or from being left in the sun inside the car for a long time. It is worth replacing them when they are broken, when the hinge is loose even after tightening the screw, or when the temple has warped and no longer returns to its shape. If the front is in good condition, replacing just the temples is much cheaper than buying a new pair of sunglasses.
Before you start
Check your model and lens size
On the inside of the temple you’ll see the reference of your glasses, in a format such as “RB3025 001 58□14”. In your case it should start with “RB2140”. This is followed by the frame color code and two numbers separated by a square: the lens size (lens width) and the bridge. The Wayfarer comes in several lens sizes and colors, so note down the full reference before ordering the temples.
What you need
- The replacement temples for the 2140 model.
- A precision screwdriver.
- Fine tweezers (optional) to position the screw.
- A soft cloth to rest the glasses on.
How to replace the Wayfarer temples step by step
- Open the temple and lay the glasses down. Place them on the cloth with the temple you are going to replace open, so you have good access to the hinge.
- Undo the hinge screw. Turn it counterclockwise until it comes out. Keep it somewhere safe.
- Remove the old temple. Carefully detach it from the front.
- Fit the new temple. Line up the temple’s hinge with the one on the front until the holes match.
- Insert the screw. Using the tweezers, place it in the hole and give it the first few turns without forcing it.
- Tighten gently. The temple should be secure but open and close without effort.
- Check. Try the glasses on and make sure both temples sit the same.
Common mistakes
- Ordering the temple without checking the reference. There are several versions of the Wayfarer and other very similar acetate models.
- Using a screwdriver that doesn’t fit. It ruins the screw head.
- Overtightening. On acetate, a screw that is too tight can damage the hinge or leave the temple stiff.
- Losing the screw. Work on a clear, light-colored surface.
- Bending the temple cold to adjust it. If you need to adjust the acetate, warm it first with gentle heat.

Temples for your Wayfarer
Tip: if the new temple ends up a little loose or pinches behind your ear, you can adjust the curve of the temple tip by warming the acetate with hot water or a hair dryer on a low setting and bending it little by little. Never bend it cold.
