To find out which Oakley model you have, and what color its frame and lenses are, just look at the series of numbers printed on the inside of one of the temples. That reference is the key to ordering the exact lens, temple or part. We explain how to read it step by step.
Where to find the Oakley serial number
Look on the inside of the temples, the side that rests against your head. On one of them you will find a series of letters and numbers starting with “OO”. It can wear off a little with use: look at it in good light and, if necessary, take a photo with your phone and zoom in.
In the images at the top of this article, each part of the reference is highlighted.
How to read the reference step by step
- The model: OOXXXX. The reference starts with “OO” followed by four digits. This first set of numbers is your Oakley model. For example, OO9013 is the Frogskins and OO9417 the Holbrook XL.
- The frame color. These are the two digits right after the hyphen.
- The lens color. These are the two digits that follow the frame color.
- The lens size. These are the next two digits, next to the color. They indicate the size of the lens.
- The temple length. These are the last numbers printed on the temple. Temples come in different lengths, so it is important to know yours so your sunglasses don’t slip off.
Why it matters so much
Many Oakley models look alike, and some come in several sizes with different lenses. For example, the Holbrook and the Holbrook XL have a very similar shape, but their lenses are not interchangeable. If you order from the photo rather than the reference, it is easy to get it wrong. With the model number and the size, you will get it right the first time.
What you can order with this information
With the model and the lens size you can order replacement lenses, both original and compatible, and choose any color you like. With the model and the temple length you can order new temples. And if what has broken is a small part, such as a nose pad, a temple tip or a screw, the model number is the first thing we will ask you for to find it. Keep a photo of the reference on your phone: it will save you time next time.
Common mistakes
- Going by the shape alone. Some models look almost identical from the outside but have different lenses.
- Forgetting the size. Some models are made in more than one size.
- Mixing up the frame color and the lens color. They are two separate codes that come one after the other.
- Not checking the temple length. A temple that is too short or too long will stop your sunglasses from fitting properly.
- Mixing up brands. Make sure the reference starts with “OO”: other brands use similar numbers.
Frequently asked questions
What if the numbers have worn off?
Check the other temple, or the case or original box if you still have them. If you can’t find the reference, send us photos of the front and the temples and we will help you identify the model.
Do I need all the codes to order a lens?
The essentials are the model and the size. The original lens color is useful as a reference, but you can choose a different color as long as the lens is made for your model.
What about ordering a temple?
You need the model and, if there are several, the temple length. The frame color helps you choose one that matches.
What if I have prescription Oakleys?
You read the reference in exactly the same way. If you would like prescription lenses fitted to your frame, write to us with the reference and we will advise you.
