The lenses are the part of a pair of Ray-Bans that takes the most punishment: they get scratched, knocked and sometimes broken. The good news is that on most models you can replace them yourself. On metal frames you just loosen a screw; on acetate frames you warm the frame slightly so it gives a little. We explain both cases.
Before you start
Identify your model and lens size
Look for the reference on the inside of one of the temples. You will see something like “RB3025 001 58□14”: “RB3025” is the model, “001” the frame color, and “58□14” gives the lens size (the lens width in millimeters) and the bridge width. The lens size is essential: the same model is made in several sizes, and a lens in a different size won’t fit.
What you need
- Replacement lenses for your model and lens size.
- For metal frames: a precision screwdriver and, if possible, a pair of tweezers.
- For acetate frames: a bowl of hot (not boiling) water or a hair dryer on a low heat setting.
- A soft cloth or chamois to rest the lenses on so they don’t get scratched.
Changing the lenses in metal frames
Models such as the Aviator (RB3025) or the Round Metal (RB3447) hold each lens in place with a screw that closes the rim. The video at the top shows this case.
- Find the rim screw. Metal frames usually have two screws: one for the lens and another for the temple. The one that opens the rim is the lens screw.
- Loosen the lens screw. On Aviator or Round-style models it helps to loosen the temple screw slightly as well, so the rim opens more easily.
- Remove the old lens. Hold the glasses over the cloth, because the lens may drop out when the rim opens.
- Fit the new lens. Make sure it is properly seated in the groove of the rim, the right way round.
- Screw it back in. Tighten gently until the lens is secure, without overdoing it.
Changing the lenses in acetate frames
On plastic models such as the Wayfarer, the lens is press-fitted into the groove of the frame. Acetate becomes more flexible when warm, and that is what we take advantage of.
- Warm the frame. Dip the lens area of the frame in hot water for about 10 seconds, or blow warm air over it with the hair dryer on a low setting. Never use boiling water or very high heat.
- Push the lens out from the inside. With the frame still warm and a cloth underneath, press with your thumbs on the center of the lens, from the inside outward.
- Warm the frame again. If it has cooled down, heat it again before fitting the new lens.
- Snap in the new lens. Insert the top edge into the groove first, then finish by pressing the bottom edge until the lens is fully in.
- Check all the way around. Make sure the lens sits inside the groove around its entire edge.
Common mistakes
- Buying the wrong lens size. Always check the number before the square on the temple.
- Overtightening the screw. On metal frames you can bend the rim or damage the lens.
- Overheating the acetate. Boiling water or high heat can warp or mark the frame.
- Working without a cloth. A lens that falls onto a hard surface will get scratched or break.
- Fitting the lens the wrong way round. Check the curve and the shape before snapping it in.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my frame is metal or acetate?
If the rim around the lens is a thin metal piece with a small screw on the side, it is metal. If it is a thick plastic piece with no screw on the rim, it is acetate.
Can I replace just one lens?
Yes, although if your lenses have a visible tint difference or wear, replacing both usually gives a more even result.
Are there compatible lenses as well as original ones?
Yes. We offer original Ray-Ban replacement lenses as well as compatible Ray-Ban replacement lenses for many models.
What if I’m not sure about my model?
Some models have slightly unusual mechanisms. Send us a photo and we will tell you how to do it.
